After last week's preview of what it means to be a Puella Magi, I felt compelled to continue with the series, in the hopes we would see Madoka get in on the action. Would I be granted this hope? Or would my hopes be crushed?

The episode opens with someone laying in what appears to be a hospital bed. A girl, Sayaka, brings what is apparently a rare CD to the bed girl, who says "let's listen together", causing Sayaka to flashback to a show she went to a while back. Follow up a touching scene with... the pop-esque OP. What the hell? Post-OP, more discussion regarding wishes is poured on.
The animation is once again beautiful, as I have come to expect from Studio SHAFT. The episode's plot, while dark, was well-written, and should elicit an reaction from anyone with a heart. The conflicts didn't feel generic, and the dialogue itself was enough to keep me interested.
I was tad thrown by the mood whiplash in the first few minutes of the episode. This show needs to be careful about doing that too much. The pacing is starting look bad for this show. Just make your damn wishes on get on with the plot.
The episode had its issues, but was, overall, very decent. Excellent animation, aside from a few goofs, and good writing offset the pacing and mood issues. Although I wonder if I'm the only one who finds Kyubey rather creepy. The dark mood was only real complaint about this episode, and it's wasn't bad enough for me to drop it.

Dark and creepy! yet amazing as well, Mami's death came out of no where for me anyway. Shocked to see someone actually die in a magical girl series they get cool points there :)
