Review: Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica 4

Sayaka contemplates what to do, knowing they could die.

After last week's not-terribly-shocking twist, I was left no choice but to keep watching.  Yes, it depressed me a bit. But after Ruiko Saten's emo moment in Railgun, I'm used to depressing backstories and the angst that comes with them.  What will Madoka do with her wish, and will Kyubey twist it to benefit himself?

The episode opens with Sayaka going to visit Kamijo, who's moved to rehab. Umm, what happened to the witch? Where the hell is Mami's body and head?  Such unexplained changes...  Ah, well. Seems as though Sayaka's still unsure about her wish.  Madoka, meanwhile, is in a state of pure depression.  Mami's death hit close to home for Madoka, it seems.

More angst after the break!

There really wasn't too much good about this one.  Yeah, the voice acting was good and the plot was well-written, but it felt like there was a lot of angst, even considering what happened.  It was nice to see less of Kyubey, though.

So many things were not explained in this week's installment. How did the girls get out of the maze? Did either Madoka or Sayaka make a wish? What happened to Mami's body and head?  In the first 5 minutes, I was expecting at least one of these questions to be answered.  Leaving these questions unanswered became a bit of a distraction.  The animation quality also seemed to drop a bit compared to last week, as some of the character shots were less than detailed.

Overall, the episode is watchable, particularly if you want to see what happens next.  While there were unanswered questions, the flaws balance out the good this week.  Drama is not my favorite genre, though.  As such, this series is going on week-to-week.  If the angst gets toned down a bit, I may take it off of week-to-week.
You will keep watching, won't you?

  1. I really don't understand why you think there were any open questions left from episode 3. It was very clear that Horuma killed the witch and that ended the maze. Also, as for Mami, her head was eaten off and it seemed like the rest of her body was also partially digested. Homura explained that if you die inside a barrier, your body doesn't reappear once it's over. it sounds to me like you've missed the last 5 minutes of the show..
